NOTE: I live in Sunderland, but I'm in Birmingham from Monday August 23rd to Friday 27th - so a buyer could collect the bike there and then - or I could deliver it local to Birmingham.
I've reluctantly decided that it's time to sell my MUTT Desert Racer - one of the very early ones which were individually hand made to order by Benny and Lewis of [then] BoneShaker Customs - which subsequently became MUTT Motorcycles. I forget all the options available, but they definitely included; tank colour, front and rear lights, length of front mudguard, tyres and maybe handlebars - which means it is unlikely that there is another Desert Racer exactly the same as this one. As these early MUTTS were customized from Herald Classic bikes, they are registered on documents/certificates as being 'Herald Motor Company'.
I ordered mine around Easter 2014 and took delivery in the June. There weren't many made around that time and so there can't be many still around ... and there can't be many [any?] at all with such a low mileage.
It's in red and white - the right colour because that's what the old Triumph Desert Racers were [like the one Steve McQueen had - see the picture below, the similarity is obvious].
In addition, from new, this MUTT has had the unique registration of T25 MUT [125 MUT] ... which has to be worth a few quid [I have had an offer, but I feel it belongs on this Desert Racer].
In the first summer I used the bike quite a lot - but for a whole host of reasons, I've hardly used it all since ... as is obvious from the very low mileage of just 826 miles [shown as 1,330 kilometres on the speedo]. I'd love to keep it but retirement and downsizing means I won't have a garage to fill with 'toys' for much longer [the old Lambretta has already gone].
T25 MUT has a new MOT until August 2022. The speedo readings [in kilometres] from the last three MOTs are:
2021 : 1330 km /826 miles
2020 : 1244 km / 773 miles
2019 : 1194 km / 742 miles
Yep ... that's just 84 miles in the last couple of years.
The bike has always been kept in my garage which is integral to the house - so dry and warmish, not an old shed at the bottom of the garden.
It is original with the exception of the seat. To make it a bit more comfy, I paid £175 to have a gel pad and foam inserted - which required re-covering so I had red piping added around the edge. Note that the padding raises the seat by an inch or so from 'standard' - an advantage or disadvantage depending on your height. Oh, and I changed the mirrors to chrome from black - I'll include the black ones. Also original is the stand which seems to let the MUTT tip over - don't worry, it doesn't. These early stands don't have the engine cut-out switch which seems to cause problems on later MUTTs.
Last year when I thought I might be hitting a thousand miles, I changed the oil and air filters, oil and spark plug. The chain's been regularly lubricated. It's also had a new battery - a pretty common problem on early MUTTs I believe.
Relevant to London - not sure about anywhere else - is that I've checked with the Government website, and the bike is ULEZ free [see photo below].
I put a small round satchel on the front forks - I think it looks good and it's useful for a few odds and ends. I'll leave it on. I've also got a bike cover, the new owner may as well have that as well.
As you would expect from this MUTT's history, and you can see in the photos, the bike is in excellent condition.
The selling price is £1850. I don't do this wheeler-dealer-price-it-high-and-accept-a-lower-offer-after-haggling thing - so no offers please. I reckon the bike itself is worth this price [and more?] - and then there's the one-of-a-kind 'private plate' that goes with it. I also hope this price will attract a MUTT enthusiast and not someone who's going to put it straight on fleabay for a quick profit.
If more than one person from this Mutt Facebook group ad does show an interest in buying the bike it goes to the first genuine person with an offer of the asking price. If no one responds I'll just stick it on fleabay myself.
I'm not one of these people who is surgically attached to their phone, so if you're interested, start the conversation by dropping me an email on
and I'll get back to you.
I’m in Sunderland and getting the MUTT is the new owner's responsibility [please consider that before showing an interest] ... but I could trailer it a reasonable distance at 50p per mile one-way [e.g. if my house to your house is 100 miles I’ll charge you £50].
Oh, a PS ... if the buyer is new to biking, I've got two quality helmets, gloves, a leather jacket and reinforced jeans to sell as well.
Thanks for looking.
